We are delighted to welcome online attendees to this years’ Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (FSEM) 18th Annual Scientific Conference, which marks the 20th anniversary of the FSEM. We are excited to announce a number of national and international expert speakers to present on ‘Sports Medicine Challenges of the Thigh and Lower Leg’. We are finalising a number of more speakers but here is a taster of what to expect. This conference will be co-chaired by Dr Pat O’Neill (Consultant in orthopaedic & sports medicine, Mater Private & Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospitals) and Dr Ronan Kearney (Sports and Exercise Medicine Fellow, Sports Surgery Clinic, Dublin).
Part 1 of the conference will explore functional anatomy of the thigh alongside current concepts in assessment and management of challenging hamstring and quadricep injuries. To date confirmed speakers for Part 1 include:
Physiotherapist and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Queensland. Extensively published on hip, groin and lower limb biomechanics.
Rehabilitation Physiotherapist Leinster Rugby. PhD candidate with a focus on hamstring injuries.
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon University College London Hospitals. Professor of Orthopaedics and Sports Surgery University College London.
Consultant Sports and Exercise Medicine Physician at the Institute of Health, Exercise and Health. Chief Medical Officer for British Athletics. Lead author for British Athletic Muscle Injury Classification publications.
Part 2 of the conference will focus on a variety of lower leg pathologies including bone stress injuries, chronic exertional leg pain, sporting vascular lower limb differentials as well as assessment and management of gastrocnemius, soleus and achilles injuries. The event also gives clinicans and students an opportunity to present summaries of their research during the Research Presentation sections throughout the day. The Moira O’Brien Medal will be awarded for the Best Research Presentation.
